I also loved it: I was thrilled by big chunks and cried big wet tears at others. We all know that BSG is not about eye-popping special-effects, that it made a virtue of being low-tech and grungy.

But for the finale Moore, Eick and Michael Rymer clearly broke the piggy bank on the CGI and the visuals generally; from the moment Galactica jumped in front of the Colony and the firefight began, BSG was like the mousy girl who took off her glasses and let down her hair.

Where have you been hiding, miss? Fields of pulsing gun turrets! Galactica getting lit up! Old-school Centurions! Just take the logistics of the battle, for one thing: the battlestar crunching headfirst into the Colony was a close-quarters clinch unlike nothing I recall seeing in a previous space battle.

As thrilling as the battle, or more so, was the cat-and-mouse chase of Hera, particularly the way in which the visions of the Opera House came together as a kind of road map out of the Colony.

As for the resolution of the battle, it was satisfying in some ways and frustrating in others. The idea of swapping Resurrection technology for Hera, then parting ways, seemed like classic BSG: the idea of humans and Cylons breaking the cycle and reaching a truce—or here, an amicable divorce—seemed like where the series was headed.

The idea, or at least this was what I thought the series was telling us, was that human and Cylon had to find a resolution other than one side obliterating the other.

Was the fleet right to cut a deal? Was Cavil finally to be trusted in the end? Although Cavil, blowing his brains out, must have gone to his grave believing that he was right, that the humans betrayed him, and that he and his race died in a noble failure because of the perfidy of man.

Head Baltar and Head Six? The Opera House? Humans evolving separately on two planets? I kind of like the audacity of a sci-fi series getting this explicitly spiritual in explaining its mythology.

Lucas had commissioned Rice to design a promotional brochure that was to be distributed to cinema theatre owners. He instructed Rice to produce a logo that would intimidate the viewer, and he reportedly asked for the logo to appear "very fascist " in style.

Rice, inspired by historical German typography , produced a bold logotype using an outlined, modified Helvetica Black.

Lucas's producer, Gary Kurtz , found that Rice's logo worked well in the opening title; the logo was modified further to flatten the pointed tips on the letter W before it was inserted into the final cut.

In a interview, George Lucas described how the final phrasing of the text for Star Wars came about. It's like a poem.

I showed the very first crawl to a bunch of friends of mine in the s. It went on for six paragraphs with four sentences each.

Brian De Palma was there De Palma helped to edit the text into the form used in the film. According to Dennis Muren , who worked on the first six films, crawls on the original trilogy films were accomplished by filming physical models laid out on the floor.

The crawl effect was accomplished by the camera moving longitudinally along the model. It was difficult and time-consuming to achieve a smooth scrolling effect.

With the advent of computer-generated graphics , the crawls for the prequel trilogy were achieved much more quickly.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated that the spin-off film Rogue One would "more than likely" eschew certain traditional elements of the franchise, including the crawl, in an effort to distinguish it from the main film series.

The second spin-off film Solo does not feature a crawl, but does feature an introductory text shown sentence by sentence in the same font and color as and immediately after "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away The opening crawl in the first Star Wars film is very different from Lucas's original intention.

The original text, used in the rough cut he showed to friends and studio executives in February , appears in the Marvel Comics adaptation of the film.

When originally released in May , the first film was simply titled Star Wars , as 20th Century Fox forbade Lucas to use a subtitle on grounds that it could be confusing, since there had been no other Star Wars movies prior to Also, it should be noticed that the original version of Episode IV 's crawl features a lowercase "R" for "Rebel spaceships" and "Rebel spies", as, at the time, "Rebel" in its Star Wars meaning , just like "Imperial", was not considered some sort of demonym -like adjective as it is now.

Freelancer plays this trope to some degree. The opening movie makes it clear that Humanity emigrated from Earth towards the Sirius sector, and the places are named after actual locations in the Earth , yet nobody in the entire game makes even a single reference to Earth.

We have prospered. We have flourished. But we will never forget. The original E3 trailer showed a Nomad ship arriving after the Exodus and destroying the Solar System.

A single ship survived the nova and took off after the colonists to warn them. Suddenly, the "we will never forget" line takes on a whole new meaning But yeah, they still forget.

Then again, it's centuries after the Sirius sector is settled. There've been dozens of wars in the meantime.

Who cares about Earth That Was? They got their own problems. Earth is never mentioned by name, but several people obviously have detailed information about its geography, given that not only are various planets, stations, and ships named after locations on Earth, but their roles and importance match up.

For instance, the planet Cambridge is home to a major university, while Newark Station is in its proper position orbiting Planet Manhattan.

There are only a handful of locales that aren't named for places on Earth. The upcoming Studio FOW game, Subverse will be set in the Prodigium Galaxy, a "mysterious galaxy tucked firmly away in the asshole of the universe".

But it does have human residents who got sent there by an Unrealistic Black Hole. Elite is this because of Gameplay Story Segregation.

Supplementary materials mention humans coming from Earth but the gameplay consists of fictional planets in eight procedurally generated galaxies.

From Frontier: Elite II onwards, Earth and nearby stars were featured in a realistically sized galaxy. The eight galaxies from the original game were generally considered to be distant sectors of our own galaxy.

Web Comics. Cosmic Dash is set in a galaxy called the Silver Spiral, which has known human immigration for a few generations. Walter Kimney is described as "a second generation human resident of the Silver Spiral Galaxy", while the three human fleet commanders of the Federation, who appear younger than him, are listed as third generation citizens.

The Masters of the Universe franchise. It turns out Earth is familiar to the characters, especially Queen Marlena who was originally an Earth astronaut , and it is light-years away from Eternia, and they do get visitors from planet Earth.

He-Man's mother coming from Earth was only written in for a Superman crossover to explain the He-Man recognised Supes because his mother had described him before.

An early draft of the Masters of the Universe movie had Eternia as an Earth colony in the distant future, Skeletor would have had an ancient American space probe stashed under his castle.

The gang's journey to Earth would also have been a journey to the past. Wander over Yonder takes place in a galaxy full of Baby Planets , all of which seem to be inhabited by different alien species.

The only possible connection to Earth occurs in the the last shot of the series, which implies Lord Hater is an ape astronaut , and shows a wrecked spaceship with what appears to be a US flag.

Third Earth of ThunderCats was originally said to be post-apocalyptic Earth, but the show stopped mentioning it after the beginning.

The s comic book series, which included a crossover with G-Force from Earth, claimed that it was another planet after all.

SWAT Kats was set on a world inhabited by anthropomorphic cats. The aliens from the episode "When Strikes Mutilor" were originally going to be revealed to be humans, complete with an American flag, but Hanna-Barbera executives found this confusing and made the writers replace them with cat aliens.

Levram turns out to be an Alternate History Earth where a Super Serum from the future gave everybody superpowers.

Notably one of the few times normalman leaves these planets is to engage in a Star Wars parody story.

That Moebius is Earth in a post-apocalyptic future where aliens wiped out most of humanity and accidentally uplifted the animals in the process.

The Ice Pirates plays the trope straight but the original ending was going to have the ice planet turning out to be Earth.

StarCraft I seemed to be this at first. The Terran colonists from Earth arrived in the Koprulu sector when their ships' FTL drives malfunctioned and they wound up being blasted so far into deep space that there was seemingly no hope of ever contacting their homeworld again.

However, then Brood War came along and Blizzard decided to put Earth back in the story. V , on the other hand, changes the focus from the Galaxy Federation to Earth.

Tyrian has Trent Hawkins jump into hyperspace, set for an unheard-of planet light years away.

The planet in question is Earth. The original Pikmin appears to be on alien world being explored by diminutive humanoid space explorers, but it's heavily implied and outright shown in Pikmin 2 to be Earth All Along after the humans died out.

No Man's Sky is set across fictional galaxies with no Earth or humans. The original text, used in the rough cut he showed to friends and studio executives in February , appears in the Marvel Comics adaptation of the film.

Why did this thing cause that thing? Where did it all come from and where does it end up? What are the answers? A non sci-fi series may be savaged for its finale, like The Sopranos or Seinfeld, but only the most aggrieved will say that these finales retroactively ruined everything that came before it.

Battlestar Galactica has always been marked as being not just a sci-fi show, which is to say that it was not just about the mythology, the science or the special effects but the ideas and the characters.

This is unfair to pretty much every good sci-fi show ever created, but there you have it. Which if anything just doubles the expectations of it.
